What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is far more than back cracking. It is a primary healthcare discipline focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system — with particular emphasis on the spine and its relationship to the nervous system and overall health.

Chiropractors are trained as primary healthcare practitioners with full independent diagnostic scope — meaning you can consult us directly without a referral from a GP. We assess, diagnose and manage your condition from the first visit, and refer for further investigation where clinically indicated.

We treat muscle and joint related injuries throughout the entire body — including the spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle — as well as any condition involving the nervous system.

Evidence-Based

Every treatment decision grounded in peer-reviewed clinical research.

For All Ages

From newborns to nonagenarians — safe and effective at every stage of life.

Science-backed.
Results-driven.

Our treatments are grounded in peer-reviewed research. Here are three studies that underpin the clinical modalities we use every day — a small representation of the extensive body of evidence supporting modern chiropractic care.

Study 01
Spinal Manipulation & Chronic LBP
Spinal manipulative therapy produces clinically meaningful improvements in pain and function for patients with chronic low back pain, with effects comparable to other recommended therapies.
JAMA Internal Medicine 2017: Spinal Manipulative Therapy for Acute Low-Back Pain.
Study 02
Dry Needling & Myofascial Pain
Dry needling of myofascial trigger points significantly reduces pain intensity and improves pressure pain threshold in patients with upper quarter pain syndromes.
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy 2013: Dry Needling for Myofascial Trigger Point Pain.
Study 03
Accelerated Vascular Recovery
Peristaltic pulse compression therapy — as deployed in our Normatec Recovery System — demonstrably accelerates post-exercise circulatory recovery, reducing delayed-onset muscle soreness and improving peripheral vascular function.
European Journal of Applied Physiology 2015 May 16: Peripheral Conduit and Resistance Artery Function are Improved Following Peristaltic Pulse Compression.

Our clinical toolkit is organised into three groups below. Each treatment is evidence-based, applied with precision, and selected specifically for your condition and goals.

Hands-On Care
Technology-Assisted

Hands-On Care

Core Modality
Diversified Chiropractic Adjustments
Our primary clinical technique. Diversified manipulation delivers precise, high-velocity, low-amplitude thrusts to restore vertebral alignment, decompress neural structures, and re-establish optimal biomechanical function. Applied to the spine and all peripheral joints including shoulder, hip, knee, elbow and ankle.
Dry needling
Clinical Differentiator
Dynamic Dry Needling
Our dry needling is specifically dynamic — we actively elicit a local twitch response (LTR), the involuntary muscle contraction that signals effective trigger point deactivation. This distinguishes our technique from passive needle placement. By targeting myofascial trigger points precisely, dynamic dry needling resets dysfunctional motor endplates and resolves chronic referred pain patterns.
Soft Tissue
Tool-Assisted Soft Tissue Release
Using precision stainless steel instruments, TASTM detects and treats fascial restrictions, scar tissue adhesions and myofascial dysfunction at depth. Particularly effective for chronic tendinopathies, post-surgical adhesions, IT band syndrome and repetitive strain injuries common across all sporting codes and active lifestyles.
Joint Therapy
Spinal & Joint Mobilisation
Graded mobilisation techniques apply rhythmic, controlled movement within a joint's passive range. Indicated for post-surgical patients, the elderly, or those with acute inflammatory conditions — mobilisation restores joint mechanics without the high-velocity thrust of a full adjustment.
Paediatric Speciality
Craniosacral Therapy
A gentle, non-invasive hands-on technique that works with the craniosacral system — the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Particularly effective for infants, newborns, pregnancy and patients with chronic headaches, TMJ dysfunction and nervous system dysfunction. Performed by Dr. Robyn Conchar.
Pelvic Technique
Blocking Technique (SOT)
Sacro-Occipital Technique blocking uses strategically placed wedge blocks under the pelvis, leveraging the patient's own body weight to gently correct sacroiliac joint dysfunction. A low-force technique particularly effective for pelvic instability, pregnancy-related pelvic pain and chronic sacroiliac conditions.
Exercise and rehabilitation
Rehabilitation
Exercise & Rehabilitation Protocols
Structured, individualised rehabilitation programmes progressing from pain-free movement restoration through to strength, stability and functional performance. Specific programmes for athletes across all sporting codes, weekend warriors, gym enthusiasts, post-surgical patients and chronic pain sufferers.

Technology-Assisted Therapy

Advanced Technology
EMS Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)
EMS Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a clinically validated, non-invasive treatment that uses precisely controlled radial or focused shockwaves to stimulate cellular repair, break down calcific deposits and promote neovascularisation. Clinically proven for plantar fasciitis, epicondylitis, Achilles tendinopathy, calcific rotator cuff tendonitis and chronic soft tissue pain. Used by elite athletes, Olympians and professional sports teams worldwide.

The Recovery Lab

Our dedicated Recovery Lab is what sets us apart. A curated suite of advanced recovery technologies designed to accelerate healing, flush inflammation, and prepare your body to perform — used standalone or as a complement to treatment.

Compression boots
Compression Recovery
Normatec Compression System
Sequential pneumatic pulse compression distally-to-proximally across the limbs, mimicking the body's natural muscle-pump at a level passive rest cannot achieve. Dramatically accelerates lymphatic drainage, metabolic waste clearance, reduces DOMS and enhances tissue reperfusion. Backed by clinical research in the European Journal of Applied Physiology (2015).
Cold Therapy
CryoPush Cold Compression Therapy
Targeted cold therapy combined with intermittent pneumatic compression for powerful dual-modality intervention. Controls inflammatory mediator release, prevents oedema accumulation and accelerates lymphatic return. Indicated for acute injury management, post-surgical rehabilitation and high training loads.
Massage chair
Passive Recovery
Massage Recovery Chairs
A relaxing but clinically purposeful addition to your recovery session. Post-treatment massage chairs support parasympathetic nervous system activation, reduce residual muscle tension and enhance the overall recovery experience — used by the vast majority of our patients following their treatment — it has become a standard part of our post-treatment protocol, supporting muscle relaxation and nervous system recovery before patients leave.

What patients ask us most

Straightforward answers — because an informed patient is an empowered patient.

A chiropractic adjustment — also called spinal manipulation — is a precise, controlled force applied to a specific joint, most commonly in the spine. The goal is to restore normal movement to a joint that is restricted or not moving correctly. When a joint is not moving as it should, it creates a cascade of problems: surrounding muscles tighten to compensate, nerves can become irritated or compressed, and normal biomechanical function is disrupted throughout the body. The adjustment restores joint mechanics, releases muscle tension, decompresses neural structures and re-establishes normal movement patterns. The “pop” or “crack” that patients often hear is caused by the formation of a nitrogen gas bubble within the joint fluid as pressure rapidly changes — it is completely harmless and often immediately relieving. The bubble naturally dissolves within approximately 20 minutes. Adjustments are not limited to the spine — we routinely adjust shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles with the same precision and effect.
No — not at all. Chiropractors are registered as primary healthcare practitioners in South Africa, which means you can walk in and consult us directly without first seeing a GP or any other healthcare provider. We are trained to assess and diagnose your condition independently from the first visit. If we identify anything that falls outside our scope or requires further medical management, we will refer you to the appropriate specialist. Think of us the same way you would a GP — your first point of contact, not a second opinion.
Yes. As primary healthcare practitioners, chiropractors in South Africa are authorised to refer patients directly for X-rays, diagnostic ultrasound and blood tests where clinically indicated — without needing a GP referral first. This means we can investigate your condition thoroughly, interpret the results and factor them into your diagnosis and treatment plan, all within the same clinical relationship. This is one of the key distinctions between chiropractic and many other allied health professions.
Absolutely not — and this is the most common misconception about chiropractic. We treat any condition involving the neuromusculoskeletal system: shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle injuries, headaches, jaw pain, plantar fasciitis, sports injuries and much more. At Benoni Chiropractic Health we often treat more muscular conditions than spinal ones.
Adjustments are typically painless. Some patients experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours following a first adjustment — similar to post-exercise muscle fatigue. Our practitioners always work within your comfort threshold and explain exactly what to expect before every procedure.
Dynamic dry needling specifically aims to elicit a local twitch response — an involuntary muscle spasm confirming that the trigger point has been deactivated. This active approach produces faster and more complete muscle release than passive needle placement. You may feel a brief deep ache as the twitch occurs, which is normal and signals the treatment is working.
This depends on your condition and how long you've had it. Acute presentations often respond in 4–6 sessions. Chronic conditions may benefit from a longer corrective care programme. Your chiropractor will give you a clear treatment plan with realistic expectations at your initial assessment.
Yes. Paediatric and geriatric chiropractic uses significantly modified, gentle techniques. Forces are adapted to the individual — a child receives very different treatment to an adult. Our team regularly sees whole families, from infants through to patients well into their nineties.
Yes — chiropractic care is safe throughout all three trimesters of pregnancy, and this is one of the most common misconceptions we encounter. Many patients arrive believing they could not be treated in their first trimester, or that they needed to wait until after delivery. This is not the case. Chiropractic treatment during pregnancy is not only safe but can be enormously beneficial — helping manage the postural changes, pelvic imbalances and musculoskeletal discomfort that accompany each stage of pregnancy.

Techniques are always adapted to the stage of pregnancy. We use pregnancy-specific positioning, gentle mobilisation and, where appropriate, specialised pelvic and sacral adjusting to support both comfort and optimal foetal positioning throughout all three trimesters. If you are pregnant and unsure whether chiropractic is right for you, please call us — we are happy to discuss your specific situation before you book.
Yes — paediatric chiropractic is extremely safe, and a concern we hear frequently from parents is that we will adjust their child the same way we adjust an adult. We absolutely do not. The techniques used for infants and young children bear no resemblance to adult treatment — there is no forceful manipulation, no cracking and no sudden movements.

Infant chiropractic uses fingertip-pressure techniques so gentle they are often compared to the pressure you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. For newborns in particular, the focus is on releasing tension in the cranial bones, the sacrum and the soft tissues of the spine — accumulated from the birth process itself, which places significant forces on a newborn’s spine and skull. Many parents are amazed at how little physical intervention is involved and how positively their babies respond.

Dr. Robyn Conchar has a special clinical interest in paediatric and infant chiropractic and sees children of all ages regularly in our practice.
Yes, we accept most major South African medical aid schemes. We recommend confirming your specific plan’s chiropractic benefit prior to your appointment. Contact us on 061 110 6887 and our team will assist.
EMS Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a clinically validated, non-invasive treatment that uses precisely controlled radial or focused shockwaves to stimulate cellular repair, break down calcific deposits and promote neovascularisation — triggering the body’s own healing response in areas of chronic pathology that have failed to self-resolve. Most patients feel a tapping or pressure sensation during treatment. Some discomfort over the treatment site is normal, particularly for calcific conditions, but sessions last only 5–15 minutes with no anaesthetic, no injections and no downtime. Results are typically felt within 3–5 sessions.

Normatec boots are inflatable compression sleeves that fit over your legs and use a patented pulsing air pressure system to accelerate recovery. They apply sequential waves of pressure from your feet upward toward your hips — mimicking your body’s own muscle-pump mechanism far more effectively than passive rest alone. The result is rapid flushing of metabolic waste products, reduction of inflammation and swelling, and faster muscle recovery. Used by professional sports teams and elite athletes across all disciplines worldwide, our Normatec system is available as part of your post-treatment protocol. Most patients describe the sensation as a deep, rhythmic massage — and regularly return just for the boots.

CryoPush is an advanced cold compression therapy system that combines targeted cold therapy with intermittent pneumatic compression simultaneously — two powerful recovery modalities in one treatment. The cold component rapidly reduces tissue temperature at the injury site, controlling pain and limiting inflammation. The simultaneous compression prevents fluid accumulation and drives lymphatic return. Together they work faster and more effectively than ice packs or compression bandages alone. It is particularly effective for acute injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, joint swelling, and high training volume management across all sporting disciplines.

Both chiropractors and physiotherapists are skilled musculoskeletal practitioners and both have an important role in patient care — we refer to physiotherapists regularly and have great respect for the profession.

The main structural differences are these: in South Africa, chiropractors complete a six-year Master of Chiropractic (MChiro) degree and are registered as primary healthcare practitioners, meaning patients can consult us directly without a referral. We are trained to independently assess, diagnose and manage musculoskeletal conditions from the first visit, and can refer directly for X-rays, ultrasound and blood tests where clinically indicated. Physiotherapists complete a four-year Bachelor degree and have traditionally worked more within rehabilitation and post-surgical recovery settings, where they genuinely excel.

In practice, the two professions complement each other well. If you are unsure which is right for your situation, feel free to call us — we will always point you in the right direction, even if that means referring you elsewhere.
