WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Chiropractors are primary health care professionals meaning that they can specifically:
- Diagnose
- Treat
- Give specific advice on areas of one’s health and wellness
- Maintain
All neuromuscular-skeletal related conditions.
Chiropractic is 100% natural.
For over a century, doctors of Chiropractic have successfully helped millions of individuals recover from spine-related health problems. As a result, chiropractic has earned its place as the largest drugless and non-surgical health care profession.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC WORK?
Life’s little incidents and accidents such as car accidents, recreational injuries, repetitive work related postures as well as home stresses, to name just a few of the potential factors, overpower the body’s ability to adjust to its internal and external environment.
The human body has the natural ability to regenerate; this ability relies on guidance from a healthy nervous system and correct movement of the spine which encapsulates it. If the body’s ability to adjust to its environment is altered in any way, the joints of the spine tend to lock or get stuck thus in turn leading to a lack of motion within those segments.
Chiropractic care specifically identifies and corrects these structural changes, known as Chiropractic subluxations, and restores the body to its natural functions.
Chiropractic subluxations often manifest as the following in the affected area:
- Pain
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Tingling ‘pins and needles’
- Numbness
Muscle spasm is also found around the affected joints as a secondary response to the ‘locked joint’. These muscles spasms can manifest as pain to areas like:
- Head (headaches)
- Shoulders
- Down the arms
- Into the ribcage
- To the hips
- Buttocks or down the legs
Diminished nerve function can cause the whole body to be affected negatively; as vital information travels from the brain to the rest of the body via the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Chiropractic subluxations essentially interfere with the body’s natural ability to communicate within itself. This in turn compromises normal functioning of the body and its different systems.
Chiropractic treatment clears the pathways for the body to maintain its own optimal health, just the way it was naturally designed to do.
WHO SHOULD SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?

Since we all have a spine, the potential for the its normal function to be affected, at any given time, is present in people of all ages.
Chiropractic care offers patients the opportunity to experience relief and improved overall health and is highly effective in the treatment and prevention of back and neck pain.
Chiropractic has been proven to be extremely safe as it is a drug free, non-surgical approach to health. This places Chiropractic as one of the safest of all health care practices.
“Medicine is the study of disease, and what causes a man to die. Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes a man to live.” -B.J Palmer

HOW ARE CHIROPRACTORS EDUCATED?

Like all primary health care practitioners, Chiropractors undergo extensive education and training at internationally accredited Universities.
Students begin by fulfilling an undergraduate degree requiring the full comprehension of core sciences such as:
- Chemistry
- Anatomy
- Physiology
- Physics
They then begin the program leading to the Master’s qualification in Chiropractic. This includes the detailed studies of:
- Pathology
- Biochemistry
- Clinical biomechanics and kinesiology
Their education continues into the advanced clinical sciences including:
- Orthopaedics
- Neurology
- Examination procedures
- Differential diagnosis
- X-ray,MRI, CT and Diagnostic Ultrasound interpretation
Practical experience, in the final years, is categorised into:
- 2 year residency at outpatient clinics
- The completion of a clinical trial dissertation research
- Completion of a two year internship program
WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON MY FIRST VISIT?
The initial visit begins with a detailed consultation. Your Chiropractor will take a detailed history and evaluate the nature of your condition. This evaluation usually includes a series of basic physical tests as well as more focused orthopaedic examinations and Chiropractic evaluations of spinal movement and posture.
If necessary, your doctor may recommend X-rays or other diagnostic tests to obtain further information about the mechanics of your spine and the details of your condition.
Your doctor will then analyse your information and assess your condition and the appropriate plan of treatment. If your case will not benefit from Chiropractic treatment, your doctor will refer you to the appropriate health care practitioner or specialist for further evaluation.
Following your initial consultation and examination by your qualified Doctor of Chiropractic, a specific treatment plan will be drawn up which caters to your specific needs. This program is focused around the Chiropractic manual adjustment. This will improve and correct:
- Segmental motion in the joint
- Stimulate the surrounding nerve fibers
- Influence intra-joint and inter-joint fluid dynamics
You may feel immediate relief and improvement after an adjustment, or you may experience a gradual, progressive relief of symptoms. Since Chiropractic adjustments restore movement in segments from a ‘locked’ to normal position, the “freeing” of the joint movement allows all the stretched, irritated ligaments and tendons to also return to their normal resting position. Since this prolonged lengthened position has been restructured to resting length, slight muscle soreness similar to intensive exercise may be experienced. If any such symptoms are experienced rest assured that they will dissipate and you will be left to enjoy the benefits of improved spinal motion and less pain, which ultimately results in improved spinal health.
For the best results, follow the plan that your doctor of chiropractic recommends for you.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC CORRECT MY SPINAL PROBLEMS?

The number of visits you make to your chiropractor is case specific to the type and duration of your condition and your personal health goals.
Many people utilise chiropractic care on regular basis for preventive health care, as they understand the importance of maintaining good body movement, posture and function.
Some individuals seek treatment for their specific conditions with the primary objective being to relieve pain.
At Benoni Chiropractic Health Centre we take time to discuss the objectives, your expectations and goals of the treatment, and then formulate the most effective treatment plan that is best for you.
IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE EXPENSIVE? WILL MY MEDICAL AID COVER IT?
Chiropractic has demonstrated itself to be one of the most cost-effective forms of health care.
At Benoni Chiropractic Health Centre we charge below medical aid based rates. We are contracted out of medical aids thus once you settle your account at our clinic we submit your invoice to your medical aid for reimbursement on your behalf. Under special circumstances we do help individual patients with claiming on their behalf to Discovery Health members only.
